Preparing For Flu Season

The flu season is upon us and many people wonder what symptoms to look for. There are primary symptoms and other symptoms that will help. Here at Foley Area C.A.R.E. we would like to share some of these symptoms with you and help you know what to do if you have the flu.

Primary Flu Symptoms

  • Fever – your temperature is considered elevated at 100°F or greater
  • Aches – sudden or unexplained body aches can be a sign of the flu
  • Chills – body chills can be another sign of the flu
  • Tiredness – this is a feeling of exhaustion or lack of energy and when associated with on or more of the other symptoms, this can be a sign of the flu

Other Symptoms

  • Headache – when associated with the flu it may appear suddenly and be accompanied by body aches or nasal congestion
  • Sore throat – swelling in the throat can make it sore
  • Runny or stuffy nose – more common in children that adults
  • Stomach issues – nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
  • Chest discomfort – a cough is often severe with the flu

It is important to remember the flu is very contagious. Flu season is from late November through March. It can last a few days to a week. A flue shot is going to be your best protection against the flu. But it is still possible to get the flu as not all strains may be affected by the shot. Over-the-counter medications may help relieve flu symptoms but don’t shorten the time that you are sick. Antiviral drugs can treat the flu. They work best in the first 2 days of symptoms.

What to do with the Flu

  • Try to avoid close contact with other people
  • Stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone with medications
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then throw it in the garbage
  • Wash your hands with soap and water
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, mouth, and nose as germs spread this way
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs
